Key West Golf Cart Rentals: Things to Know
When you think of Key West, you picture colorful streets, historic landmarks, breezy waterfronts, and endless sunshine — and there’s no better way to explore it all than by golf cart!
Key West is a small island, just about 4 miles long and 2 mile wide, which makes it the perfect place for a laid-back, open-air adventure. Golf carts have become one of the most popular ways for visitors to navigate the island, offering an easy, fun, and flexible alternative to walking or biking, especially when traveling with family or a group of friends.
Renting a golf cart gives you the freedom to cruise at your own pace, stop at local shops, visit famous attractions like the Southernmost Point or Mallory Square, and even discover hidden gems off the beaten path. Plus, with the island’s warm, tropical breezes and charming architecture around every corner, a golf cart lets you truly soak in the Key West vibe.
Is Renting a Golf Cart in Key West worth it?
Depending on your plans for exploring Key West, renting a golf cart can be a worthwhile investment. If you’re looking to quickly navigate the town and see as much as possible, golf carts are an excellent choice. While scooter rentals are a great mode of island transportation, they may not be practical for groups of more than two people. Golf carts offer a much more convenient and enjoyable way to explore Key West with a group.
Whether you’re visiting for a day on a cruise ship or planning a week-long excursion, having some fun transportation is essential. Golf carts are ideal for large groups (four or more) to navigate the narrow streets and island roads.
On scorching summer days, walking or biking around the island can be uncomfortable. Golf cart rentals provide shaded canopies, allowing you to enjoy a bit of shade while you head to your next destination.
Where Can You Drive a Golf Cart in Key West?
On the island of Key West, you can explore the island by taking a golf cart or electric car. You can drive them anywhere you can imagine, except across someone’s lawn. They’re the perfect way to get around the narrow streets of Old Town, or even venture into New Town to grab groceries at Publix or Winn-Dixie.
If you want to explore a bit farther, you can drive up to Stock Island. It’s legal to drive them on US-1 on Stock Island, but I wouldn’t recommend it. Instead, take the first right turn as you cross the bridge to Stock Island. The back streets are where the best spots are.
Can You Drive a Golf Cart to Stock Island?
Absolutely! While golf carts are more prevalent in Old Town, near Duval Street and Mallory Square, you can also take them to Stock Island. If you’re seeking an adventure and a bite to eat, consider Hogfish Grill, The Docks, or Sloppy Joes Dockside. Stock Island boasts an array of fantastic restaurants waiting to be discovered.
Upon driving onto US-1 in Stock Island, you’ll quickly notice that traffic speeds up significantly on this stretch of the road. It’s important to note that you’re legally permitted to drive on any road with a speed limit of less than 35 MPH. Therefore, you can drive on this road until you reach CVS (just before the bridge to Boca Chica, where it transitions to a 45 MPH zone).
Is a license required to operate a golf cart in Key West?
Yes, renting a golf cart in Key West is essentially the same as renting a car from the airport, you need a valid drivers license. These golf carts are street-legal and licensed just like rental cars.
To rent a golf cart, you must be at least 22 years old. Additionally, anyone else who wishes to drive the golf cart must also be 22 years old or older. Only individuals who have entered into agreements with us are permitted to operate the equipment.
Which is Better, An Electric Gold Cart or Gas Golf Cart?
When choosing between renting an electric golf cart and a gas-powered one in Key West, it really comes down to your travel style and plans. Electric golf cart rentals are a great option for many visitors because they offer a quiet, smooth ride — perfect for cruising the peaceful streets of Old Town. They’re eco-friendly, easy to drive, and ideal for short trips or daily rentals where you have easy access to charging stations.
On the other hand, gas-powered golf cart rentals offer more power, making them a solid choice for larger groups or anyone planning to explore beyond the downtown area. They can easily handle a full day of driving without needing a recharge and are quicker to refuel. Gas golf carts are especially popular for multi-day rentals or when visiting during busy times like Fantasy Fest or holiday weekends, when parking might be farther away and you’ll appreciate the extra range. The trade-offs are that gas carts are noisier and produce emissions, so if you’re looking for a greener or quieter experience, electric may still be the way to go.
